This crackle technique is easy, inexpensive and works very well on any surface. All you need is white glue, latex paint (the same you use to paint walls ) and a surface .

Prepare the central picture as explained on Decoupage on glass plate and napkin tutorial. |
Put a good amount of white glue (Elmer's) on the back of the plate, not over the picture. Cover the entire border of the plate with glue using a brush or your fingers |

While the glue is still wet put a coat of latex paint on it with X brushstrokes. Do not mix paint and glue. The paint has to be ON the glue. You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to accelerate the crackles. They will appear immediately. Let dry completely. |
You can already see the crackles.

After the surface is crackled. cover it enterely with a coatof white latex paint. It will show through the crackles. |
Plate finished. You can use this technique on any surface you like. It works very well on paper, wood, plastic and metal.

This is the back of the plate. I used a marble like paper. It was finished with 5 coats of water based varnish, signed and dated. |
