I learned this technique from my Brazilian decoupage group. It is very nice when you touch it because it reminds you of leather. I used cone shaped coffee filters, stained wqith coffee. Or you can recycle your used filters, wash them and let them dry. I cut them in irregular pieces, glued to the cover using decoupage techniques, put one coat of varnish. Let it dry and then I made the stitches using CD pens ( the ones you use to write on CDs). A large pointed one for the holes and a thin pointed for the stitches. After drying I used 3 coats of acrylic varnish and one coat of oil based one. It takes about 48 hours to have it done. Please enlarge the picture to see details.
